Remembering Hurricane Helene: One Year Later

September 27, 2024, changed Ashe County forever. When Hurricane Helene swept through our mountains, it left behind devastation that our small rural towns are still recovering from today. Homes, roads, and lives were upended in an instant—but in the midst of destruction, our community came together with resilience and hope.

At Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary, we witnessed firsthand the ripple effects of the storm. Horses displaced by flooding, families forced to leave behind their animals, and farms struggling to rebuild became part of our daily mission. Over this past year, we have continued to open our gates to horses in need—both from Ashe County and from coastal areas and regions bracing for extreme weather. Providing safe refuge, veterinary care, and a place of healing has never been more important.

As we remember the storm and honor the strength of those who endured it, we also look forward. Recovery is ongoing, and so is our commitment to the animals who depend on us.

If you feel called to help, please consider donating to Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary. Your support makes it possible for us to provide shelter, care, and second chances—not only for the horses of Ashe County but for those in need wherever disaster strikes.

Together, we can turn heartbreak into hope.
