Safe Haven in the Mountains: Offering Refuge for Horses During Storms
Each year, when tropical systems threaten the Carolina coast, our hearts go out to the people and animals in the storm’s path. For horse owners facing mandatory evacuations—like those recently issued for the Outer Banks—finding a safe and secure place for their animals can be overwhelming. At Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary, we want you to know you don’t have to face it alone.
🌲 Located in the mountains of Northwest North Carolina at over 3,500 feet in elevation, our sanctuary offers a safe refuge away from the storm’s reach. We are opening our gates to displaced horses, free of charge, for as long as the storm requires.
🐴 What We Provide:
Six spacious 12’ x 12’ stalls available for storm “refugee” horses
A small pasture with a large run-in shed beside a stream, ideal for groups of horses who are used to being together
Peace, safety, and caring hands in a calm mountain setting
We do ask that owners bring their own hay and feed when possible, so that horses can stay on their regular diet.
💚 At Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary, we know the bond between horse and human runs deep, and in times of crisis, having a safe place for your animals can ease just a little of that burden.
If you’re in need of refuge for your horses during this storm, please contact us for directions and details. From our mountains to the coast, we’re wishing safety, strength, and peace for all who are in the storm’s path.
